Luigi Presicce was born in Porto Cesareo, Lecce in 1976. He lives and works in Florence and Porto Cesareo. He attended the Fine Arts Academy in Lecce, but his work has been decisively influenced by his independent studies. In 2007 he attended the Advanced Course in Visual Arts (CSAV) at the Antonio Ratti Foundation in Como under the direction of the American artist Joan Jonas. In 2008, as part of the Artist in Residence initiative, he took part in the workshop at Viafarini in Milan with the American artist Kim Jones.
Luigi Presicce's work is characterized by a very complex symbolism that puts together religion, freemasonry, medieval iconography, with a clear reference to popular culture denoting a strong bond with the Salento, his native land located in Puglia. The artist creates performances collecting information on a range of topics that become a rich and complex stratification. From this place in the memory and under the solicitation of a place, a character or a story, arise a series of images that combine and emerge compulsively, giving birth to what will constitute then a narrative stage made of symbols and allegorical figures absorbed over time.
In Milan in 2008 he founded (with Luca Francesconi and Valentina Suma) the magazine Brownmagazine followed by the Brown Project Space, for which he acts as curator. In 2011 with Giusy Checola and Salvatore Baldi he started running "Archiviazioni" (exercises of investigations and discussion on the contemporary South) in Lecce. In 2012 he took part in the Artists in Residence program at MACRO, Rome. With Luigi Negro, Emilio Fantin, Giancarlo Norese and Cesare Pietroiusti he is involved in the Lu Cafausu project, which has been invited by AND AND AND at dOCUMENTA13, Kassel.
