Jota Castro

The Artist

Jota Castro was born in Lima in 1965. He lives and works in Brussels.
Castro is a curator and one of the most interesting and active artist today to propagate a political activism within his practice. He works indifferently with the means of sculpture, photography, video, installation, creating works of great civil impact, centered on social and political issues.
Conjuring up trivial humor, politically incorrect sarcasm and a wide range of references, Castro‘s sculptures, installations and performances point up certain mechanisms at work in society, whose imbalances and weaknesses are skillfully highlighted by the artist: Castro reflects on such diverse subjects as crippling mortgages in the United States, recent genocides, the migration out of Africa, our dependence on oil, Chinese-American trade relationships, the destruction of the Amazonian rainforest due to Western consumption, and other forms of economic and ecological exploitation of Latin America.
Castro's work can be seen as an arena for free speech and the desire for hopeful radical alternatives.
He has exhibited at the Galleria Umberto di Marino, Castel Sant'Elmo, Napoli (2018); EAT: Ith Festival, Dublino (2018); Carrington Gallery, Gent (2017); Oratory of San Mercurio, Palermo (2015); Canal 05, Brussels (2014); the Galleria Umberto di Marino, Naples (2013); Barbara Thumm Gallery, Berlin (2012); Gonzalez y Gonzalez Gallery, Santiago de Chile (2010); Oliva Arauna Gallery, Madrid (2009); Playa Redondo, Miraflores district (2008); Kiasma Museum, Helsinki (2006); Uplands Gallery, Melbourne (2005); Gallery Kamel Mennour, Paris (2004); Maisonneuve Gallery, Paris (2003).
