Caro Jost was born 1965 in Munich, she currently lives and works in Munich and New York.
Concerning her body of work, Caro Jost doesn't care for conventional tools, like spatulas or brushes; the surroundings themselves are the artistic tools. She takes real imprints of street and sidewalk surfaces on canvas from so far over 80 cities worldwide. In doing so the cities immortalize their faces on her canvas.
The moment of taking the prepared canvas from the street surface is comparable to the moment of the shutter release in photography. All of Caro Jost´s Streetprints document the singular momentary situation of the environment. The result appears abstract and is yet very concrete. Why surfaces of streets? Because streets and sidewalks are the purest reflections of our human way of life.
Her work has been exhibited in many solo exhibitions, at the Dolby Laboratories by The Barnett Newman Foundation, New York (2019); at BlueRiderArt, Taipei (2018); at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich (2017); at the Museum of Concrete Art, Ingolstadt (2015); at Museum of the City of Munich (2014); at the Royal Residence, Munich (2011-2010-2009); at the Museum Laszlo Vass, Veszprém (2008); at the Galerie Florian Walch, Munich (2007); her ongoing project, Mail Art & Streetprinting, has been travelling to many cities and is continuing since 2006; Jost has also had solo shows at the Shanghai Art Salon (2003); at the American Institute of Contemporary German Culture, Washington and at the Goethe Institut, New York (2001).
She has also participated in many group exhibitions, among which we can rememeber: Museum der Bildenden Künste, Leipzig (2019); NYC Independant Film Festival, New York (2018); Anthology Film Archive, New York and Palm Springs Art Museum, Palm Desert (2017); Kunstverein, Munich (2016); American Documentary, Palm Springs (2015); New Film Makers, New York (2014); Mies van der Rohe Haus, Berlin and Festival International d´Art, Toulouse (2013); Museum Villa Stuck, Munich (2012).
