Richard Dupont’s new series of oil stick monotypes, collectively titled “Synesthesia”, explores the role of color in the particular form of the condition, which Dupont has experienced himself, that joins objects such as shapes, numbers and letters with a visual color sense perception.
The recurring motif in the series is a digital rendering of Dupont’s head, captured via laser scan, which has been transferred to a type of mesh screen. The screen is then used as a stencil, and oil stick colors are manually pushed through the screen building up a heavy texture. Color is approached intuitively and in connection with the hand, as each unique work becomes a synesthesia exercise in itself.
